Urgent: UK government shakes hands with Iranian regime despite human rights abuses and security threats

The Islamic regime’s threat is not confined to Iran. People in Britain have the right to live without fear of threats or terrorist activities by the regime.

On 28 September 2026, British police reported the arrest of five men on suspicion of explosives offences and preparing an act of terrorism in connection with an incident at RAF Fairford.

The arrests came just two days after UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband met Iranian officials at the United Nations.

The Islamic regime continues to massacre Iranians in Iran while also plotting terrorist attacks and engaging in other hostile activities on UK soil. Despite these proven terrorist activities by the Islamic regime, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband shook hands with the regime’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi. Ed Miliband reportedly described the meeting as a “good chat”.

Araghchi represents a regime that has committed decades of kidnapping, torture, rape, executions, and systematic repression of the Iranian people. Ed Miliband, who represents the UK Government, closed his eyes to this record, met with him at the highest level, and turned his back on the Iranian people and the tens of thousands who were massacred in January 2026 in Iran.

For more than four decades, the Islamic regime in Iran has been responsible for crimes against humanity, including the killing and repression of protesters, political opponents and dissidents including the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising following the death in custody of Jina Mahsa Amini.

The regime’s crimes have been repeatedly documented and raised by United Nations mechanisms, including the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran and the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Iran.

Yet, despite these records and continuing international scrutiny, Ed Miliband and the UK Government continue to legitimise representatives of the Islamic regime.

THE THREAT DOES NOT STOP AT IRAN’S BORDERS

The Iranian regime is not only a threat to people inside Iran. This is a regime that has been carrying out plots against dissidents abroad, including in the UK, attempting to kidnap individuals, and detaining dual nationals and foreign nationals, including British citizens Lindsay and Greg Forman, who remain imprisoned.

The circumstances surrounding the incident at RAF Fairford on 28 September 2026 are still being investigated, and British investigators have not publicly established a connection to Iran. However, the incident comes after explicit statements from the regime in Iran concerning RAF Fairford.

According to Reuters, on 23 July 2026, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that any base used for attacks against Iranian territory would be considered a legitimate target. The IRGC specifically claimed that US bombing missions had been launched from RAF Fairford.

These statements are significant in the wider context of concerns about Iranian state-linked activities and threats against opponents abroad, as well as concerns about the safety of the general public in the UK—concerns of which the UK Government has long been aware. Questions remain as to why the UK Government continues to legitimise representatives of this regime despite these concerns.

THE UK GOVERNMENT MUST ACT NOW

The UK Government must not allow diplomatic engagement to become a means of legitimising or whitewashing the Iranian regime’s record of terrorism in the UK, and massacres, atrocities, and crime against humanity in Iran.

The human rights and safety of people in Britain, as well as the rights of the Iranian people, must not be overlooked.

THE UK GOVERNMENT MUST:

Designate the IRGC as a terrorist organisation.

Freeze the assets of the Iranian regime, its senior figures and their family members in the United Kingdom, in accordance with UK law.

Demand the immediate release of political prisoners in Iran and an end to executions and the repression of people in Iran.

The UK Government MUST NOT allow diplomatic engagement to become a means of legitimising or whitewashing the Iranian regime’s record of terrorism in the UK, and massacres, atrocities, and crime against humanity in Iran.

Shaking hands with representatives of the Islamic regime while people are being persecuted and executed in Iran, and Iranian dissidents face terrorist threats abroad, only legitimises the regime’s crimes, and emboldens the regime to carry out more terrorist activities in the UK. Shaking hand with the Islamic regime is given them a green light to go ahead and do more crimes, even in the UK, and we as the UK government will close our eyes to it.

THE UK GOVERNMENT MUST:
