20th of November, Universal Children’s Day

Children’s rights activists are in prison in Iran

We ask you stand in solidarity with children rights activist in Iran

Children’s rights activists are being continuously interrogated, tortured, and kept in prison just because they dare to stand up for basic human rights for children.

There are a significant numbers of children as young as four years old who are working long hours to be able to survive in Iran or live in unimaginable poverty. These children are deprived of their basic human rights including safety, shelter, regular meals, medical attention, education and more.  They do not dare to dream about their future because their dreams are shattered by poverty, caused by the government in Iran.  These children are in danger of becoming ill, attacked, abused and killed. They even have a name: ‘Children of Work and the Street’.

The Islamic regime in Iran has turned a blind eye on the misery of these children and there are no laws, official organisations, or funding to support them. To support these children there are many volunteers who are working with NGOs or working individually, to help these children.  However, these organizations and their activists are often threatened by the authorities in Iran. Why? The government in Iran sees these activists as a danger to its existence, because they expose what is happening to these children. The regime also feels threatened because these NGOs and individual activities empower the children and they expose the lack of support from the government.

Saeed Shirzad, a jailed children’s rights activist who is currently serving a six-year prison sentence faced pressure from the interrogator in prison when they found his ID card which revealed that he is a support worker of the ‘Association of Children of Work and Street’. Atena Daemi, is another children rights activist in Iran, currently serving a seven-year prison. Her activities included, organising art classes for street children and teaching them.

Many activists are helping these children in an individual capacity but they are still being threatened by the government. The children rights activists who have been released are constantly harassed and closely monitored by the security services.

Despite the pressure from the government in Iran, threat of imprisonment, torture and long prison sentences, the children’s rights activists still courageously continue to support these children, to teach them how to read, write and draw; to help them to keep their dreams alive; to give them voice and hope.

On the 20th of November, Universal Children’s Day, we would like to ask you to extend your support for these jailed children rights activists.  We ask you to stand in solidarity with children rights activist in Iran. We ask you to write & tweet & share their stories and send a letter to the government in Iran to demand their release and to overturn their prison sentences. No children rights activist should be in prison. Show the government in Iran that these prisoners are not alone.

Stand in solidarity with people in Iran. Be the voice of jailed children’s rights activists in Iran.
