PRESS RELEASE

UN Special Rapporteur Joins “No to Execution Tuesdays” in a Show of Solidarity with Prisoners in Iran

Join the global call to free political prisoners, stop executions, and defend the right to life.

13 October 2026

The Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) welcomes the announced solidarity of Gina Romero, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association, who will join the “No to Execution Tuesdays” hunger strike on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, in solidarity with political prisoners and in opposition to executions in Iran.

Watch the video of Gina Romero’s announcement.

This is an important action that inspires others to take more concrete action in support of political prisoners in Ian and to stop executions.

What Is “No to Execution Tuesdays”?

A prison-based protest has become a nationwide movement.

Launched on 30 January 2024 at Ghezelhesar Prison, the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign has spread to at least 62 prisons across Iran, according to campaign reports, and continues to grow. Through weekly hunger strikes, prisoners protest executions, unfair trials, and the widespread use of the death penalty.

Despite threats, solitary confinement, and additional punishment, prisoners continue their resistance. Their determination sends a powerful message to the world: opposition to executions will not be silenced.

Yet executions continue to threaten lives across Iran, while international pressure remains inadequate to address the scale and urgency of the crisis.

CFPPI Calls for Urgent International Action

CFPPI has launched a Global Solidarity Campaign to urge people worldwide to break the silence, stand with political prisoners in Iran, and turn words of support into meaningful action.

We urge you in international human rights organisations, trade unions, student unions, women’s and children’s rights organisations, lawyers, writers, academics and all those committed to justice and freedom to:

  • Demand an immediate halt to executions in Iran and the abolition of the death penalty.
  • Demand the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners in Iran.
  • Mobilise members, networks, and resources in active support of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign.
  • Publicly express solidarity with prisoners and amplify the voices of prisoners, their families, and those resisting executions.
  • Press governments to take concrete and effective measures to help stop executions and secure the release of political prisoners.

Governments, particularly European governments, must stop hiding behind statements of concern while failing to take meaningful action. Political and economic interests must not be placed above human lives. The ongoing failure to exert effective pressure on the regime in Iran risks leaving prisoners facing execution without the international support and protection they urgently need.

The lives of prisoners are at stake. Governments must move beyond words and take decisive action. Silence and inaction are not acceptable.

CFPPI urges individuals and organisations worldwide to share this appeal, raise public awareness, and build a broad international movement in support of political prisoners in Iran and an end to executions.

The time to act is now. Every voice matters. Every life matters.
