Why do campaigners believe proscribing the IRGC matters?

Petition: https://c.org/VRHrKRL5MZ

CFPPI would like to draw your attention to an urgent issue that concerns everyone living in the UK.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), established by the Islamic Republic of Iran, has long been playing a central role in the arrest, torture, and execution of hundreds of thousands of people in Iran over more than four decades. However, the IRGC’s activities are not limited to Iran. It has also been carrying out intimidation, kidnapping, terror, and influence operations across the world, including within the UK.

Many people may not realize that the UK remains the only country in Europe that has not proscribed the IRGC as a terrorist organisation, despite ongoing public debate and growing concerns about its activities.

We invite you to watch the short video by Elika Ashoori and read the accompanying petition to learn more about why many campaigners believe this issue requires urgent attention. If you feel moved to do so, you may also choose to sign the petition and share it with others.

Why do campaigners believe proscribing the IRGC matters?

  • Threats on British soil: UK security services have identified multiple alleged plots linked to the Islamic Republic, raising concerns for communities, dissidents, and public institutions.
  • Impact on communities: Incidents such as the Golders Green attack have highlighted fears about how international tensions can affect safety and social cohesion in the UK.
  • Use of influence networks: Concerns have been raised about institutions and networks being used to spread propaganda or recruit supporters, particularly among younger audiences.
  • Growing urgency: As global tensions increase, recent arrests and investigations in the UK have led many to believe the risks are escalating.
  • Calls for government action: While there has been parliamentary discussion, campaigners argue that action has been delayed for too long.

Campaigners are calling for:

  • Immediate proscription of the IRGC under the Terrorism Act 2000
  • Freezing of UK-based assets linked to the IRGC and affiliated organisations
  • Closure of institutions alleged to act as recruitment or propaganda hubs

Please take a few moments to learn more, watch the video, and read the petition. Your awareness and support can help bring greater attention to this important issue.
