IRAN: Grave Danger Facing Political Prisoners in Iran Amid Escalating Regional Conflict

The Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) issues an urgent and deeply alarming alert: political prisoners in Iran are now facing unprecedented and immediate danger as the Islamic regime intensifies a brutal crackdown in the wake of Israeli military strikes on June 13, 2025.

In the aftermath of Israel’s targeted attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites and high-ranking regime officials, the streets of Tehran, Isfahan, and other major cities have seen a sweeping deployment of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and security forces. This surge in militarization is not aimed at protecting the public, it is a calculated, repressive manoeuvre by a regime gripped with fear, designed to quash dissent at a time of heightened vulnerability.

While the Islamic regime’s record of repression, arbitrary detention, and executions is well-documented, the current crisis is being weaponized to unleash a new and terrifying level of repression. Dozens of civilians have already been arrested for nothing more than photographing or filming the aftermath of the strikes, facing baseless charges of “collaboration with Israel.”

Inside the notorious Evin Prison, particularly Ward 8, authorities have cut off all phone communications, severing the prisoners’ only link to the outside world. As of June 15, 2025, CFPPI has received credible reports that the Women’s Ward of Evin Prison remains under total communication blackout. Families are left in agonizing uncertainty, while prisoners are isolated and exposed in an atmosphere of fear and war.

Simultaneously, the IRGC has launched a wave of threats and intimidation targeting journalists and human rights defenders. Internet access has been severely restricted nationwide, further obstructing the flow of information and increasing the risk of hidden atrocities.

CFPPI is gravely concerned that political prisoners are at extreme risk of torture, and execution. Many are held in facilities directly connected to IRGC operations, making them potential collateral damage in any future military escalation. Others face the very real possibility of targeted retaliations by a regime.

“This is the most dangerous moment for political prisoners in Iran in decades,” said Shiva Mahbobi, spokesperson for CFPPI. “They are being isolated, and left completely unprotected as the regime lashes out in desperation. Every hour that passes increases the risk to their lives.”

CFPPI urgently appeals to the United Nations, the European Union, governments worldwide, and all international human rights organizations to take immediate, public, and concrete action. The regime in Iran must be pressured to release all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally.
