Join us on the International Day in Support of Political Prisoners in Iran to demand the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and to end the death penalty in Iran
People in Iran are standing up against the brutality of the Islamic regime which has been committing crimes against humanity for four decades. Thousands of men, women, boys and girls have been arrested, tortured, imprisoned. Thousands more have been executed.
The never-ending nightmare
Beatings, solitary confinement, weeks and months without contact with another human being, crawling on broken glass, electric shocks to the genitals, rape, mock executions… this list is not taken from a horror film. This is everyday life for thousands of political prisoners in Iran. Imagine waking up every morning only to be reminded that last night’s nightmare is there waiting for you. Hundreds of men and women and juveniles do not have to imagine this. They live it. Thousands of families wake up every morning wondering what happened to their loved ones. Currently, thousands of people, including lawyers, university students, journalists, Facebook users, filmmakers, LGBT people, artists, women’s rights activists and labour activists, children’s rights activists, members of religious minorities, environmental activists and members of banned political parties have been arrested, brutally tortured, given long jail sentences and even sentenced to execution. These are just a few of the people currently in prison:
Atena Daemi (Children’s rights activist)
Esmael Abdi ( Teacher, Labour Activist)
Mohammad Habibi ( Teacher Activist)
Golrokh Ebrahimi (Women’s rights activist)
Soheil Arabi (Blogger, atheist)
Arash Sadeghi (Student activist)
Zeynab Jalalian ( Political activist)
Political prisoners and their families have not stopped fighting against injustice. There are ongoing protests and resistance in Iran in factories, universities and on the streets. During the protests in Iran in December 2017 people were chanting: ‘Down with the dictatorship’ ‘down with Rouhani’,’ ‘We don’t want the Islamic Regime’. People were protesting against more than 40 years of poverty, suppression, human rights abuse, imprisonment, torture and execution imposed on them, by the Islamic regime. During these protests, 3000 were arrested. In November 2019, the security forces of the regime, shot 1500 and arrested more than 8000 protesters. Many of them are still in Prison. Their continued fight for freedom in Iran is a call to people around the world to stand up against the tyranny of the Islamic regime in Iran.
