Saeed Malekpour, the jailed Iranian-Canadian, escaped lifesentenced in Iran

04/08/2019
Saeed Malekpour who was given a three-day furlough on 20 July 2019, has escaped Iran after spending 11 years in prison. He has now safely arrived in Victoria, Canada.

Saeed was arrested by the security forces while visiting his family in Iran in 2008. He was arrested by the security forces in Iran and was physically and psychologically tortured, was forced to confess to false accusation that was fabricated by the security forces. Saeed, based on his forced confession, was sentenced to death on the fabricated charge of ‘spreadingcorruption on earth’. His charge was later changed to life imprisonment.  In prison, Saeed was deprived of his basic rights such as access to medical attention.

During 11 years that Saeed was in prison, her sister, Maryam, has constantly campaigned for his released. Several other organisations including Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) have put pressure on the regime in Iran and campaigned for Saeed’s release.

As a result of years of torture, imprisonment and lack of medical attention, Saeed’s health has deteriorated and suffered from various illnesses. Saeed is now in Canada away from the torturers of the Islamic regime. However, there is no doubt that years of torture and imprisonment have massively impacted Saeed’s physical and mental health. Saeed’s family also endured enormous pressure and suffering due to Saeed being in prison.

The Islamic regime in Iran must to be held responsible for torturing and imprisoning Saeed and the pain and suffering they have caused him and his family.

The situation of Saeed once again, reminds us of the situation of tens of dual citizens in prison in Iran who have been used as bargaining chips by the Islamic regime in Iran.
