Shahnaz Akmali, mother of Moustafa Karimbeigi who was shot by the security forces in a protest following the so-called election of the Islamic regime in 2009 in Iran. Moustafa was only 26-year-old when he was shot. His family was threatened at the time and banned from holding a funeral for Mostafa.
Following Moustafa’s death, his mother Shahnaz Akmali, has become the voice of her son. She has defended political prisoners and their families and was well-known among the families. Shahnaz was regularly threatened by the security forces for her active part in supporting the families of political prisoners. Despite all the harassment by the authorities, Shahnaz announced that she will always be the voice of her son and the voice of justice and she is not afraid of anyone.
Shahnaz was arrested at her work place on Wednesday 25 January 2017. The security forces then raided her house and confiscated all her personal belonging including her phone.
Shahnaz Akmali’s family went to court to submit a bail for 100 million Tooman (25,000 USD) for her release but they were told that there’s no verdict issued for her release. After Shahnaz’s arrest, her family was threatened and her daughter, Maryam, received a threatening phone call from the security forces saying that they will burn their house.

Following Shahnaz arrest, thousands of people have demanded her release and have shown their solidarity with Shahnaz on social media, by sending letters and by participating in the Twitterstorm on Friday 3/02/2017. Several human rights organisations including Front Line Defenders have called on the authorities in Iran to release Shahnaz Akmali.
