Global Day in Support of Political Prisoners in Iran, Thousands of Political Prisoners Detained While Perpetrators Walk Free

Date: June 17, 2024

The Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) holds the Global Day in Support of Political Prisoners in Iran, calling for international solidarity and action. Thousands of political prisoners are currently detained and tortured by the Islamic regime in Iran. These prisoners endure horrific conditions, lacking legal representation, family visits, and medical care, with many facing the threat of execution. Meanwhile, the perpetrators of these crimes continue to walk free.

The escalation of brutality and violence by the Islamic regime and its IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) against the public and political prisoners in Iran remains largely unreported by international media. European governments, the European Union (EU), and the United Nations (UN) often turn a blind eye to these atrocities, further enabling the regime. Shockingly, the UN has even recognized figures like Raisi, the “Butcher of Tehran.” In a recent act of betrayal, the Swedish government secretly negotiated with the regime and released Hamid Nouri, a notorious criminal responsible for executing thousands in 1988. Nouri, convicted of crimes against humanity in 2021 by a Swedish court, was sentenced to life in prison. This action emboldens the Islamic regime and its IRGC to commit more crimes with impunity, signalling that their hostage-taking policy is effective.

The international community, including the EU and UN, has failed to hold the Islamic regime accountable. Those responsible for crimes, such as the murder of Mahsa Amini and the torture of protesters from the Women, Life, Freedom movement in 2021, remain unpunished. The ongoing appeasement by Western governments underscores the urgent need for global support and solidarity with the Iranian people as they fight courageously against the regime.

On this year’s Global Day in Support of Political Prisoners in Iran, CFPPI organized a conference in Toronto, Canada, featuring speakers from around the world, and will hold rallies globally to amplify the voices of political prisoners and their families.
