Political Prisoners Across Iran Stage “No Death Penalty Tuesdays” Hunger Strikes
Nationwide Movement Expands to 25 Prisons Amid Intensified Crackdowns
IRAN: Political prisoners across Iran have launched a powerful, unified protest against the regime’s widespread use of the death penalty. Known as “No Death Penalty Tuesdays,” the initiative has grown dramatically, with inmates in 25 prisons participating in weekly hunger strikes.
Why Tuesdays?
This movement, which began on 30th January, 2024, in Ghezelhesar Prison, where Tuesday is the day inmates are transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for execution. Protesters use this symbolic day to draw attention to the injustices of their trials and the use of executions as tools of political suppression.
A Growing Movement Despite Repression
What began in a single prison has now spread nationwide, despite severe repercussions. Protesters face harsh punishment, including extended sentences and solitary confinement. Yet, the movement continues to gain momentum. Political prisoners urge global citizens and organizations to amplify their voices and call for an end to executions.
Urgent Call for International Action
In the absence of international media coverage, the regime in Iran has escalated its execution campaign, using fabricating charges against hundreds of political prisoners and thousands of others, particularly those accused of drug-related offenses. In September 2024 alone, at least 93 executions were recorded. According to Amnesty International, over 850 executions took place in Iran in 2023. This alarming trend underscores the urgency of global intervention.
Voices at Risk
The Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) updates a weekly list of those facing execution. Among them are:
- Two women’s rights activists: Verisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi
- Four protesters: Ali Mojaddam, Moin Khanfari, Adnan Mousavi, and Muhammad Reza Moghadam
- Six young men known as the “Ekbatan Boys”
The regime’s judicial system lacks transparency and fairness and it is controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Political prisoners often face torture, are denied legal representation, medical attention and are forced into false confessions. Sham trials further highlight the urgent need for international action.
How to Support “No Death Penalty Tuesdays”
CFPPI urges governments, international organisations organizations, Labour union and individuals to stand in solidarity:
- Issue a Statement of Support: Demand an immediate halt to all execution sentences in Iran.
- Contact Your Representatives: Urge parliamentarians and foreign ministers to apply effective pressure on the regime in Iran to sop executions.
- Raise Awareness on Social Media: Use hashtags: #NoDeathPenaltyTuesdays and #StopExecutionsInIran to amplify the message.
A Global Call for Justice
Ending executions in Iran requires collective, international action. By supporting this movement, you defend human rights and oppose the death penalty. Silence only enables further injustice; your voice can make a difference.
Stand with the brave political prisoners leading “No Death Penalty Tuesdays.” Together, we can end executions in Iran and fight for justice.
