Iran Sentences Popular Rap Artist Toomaj Salehi to Execution
Iranian rap artist Toomaj Salehi, 33, has been sentenced to execution in Iran. Salehi, known for his support of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement through his music, has been incarcerated since 2022. Despite being released on bail, Salehi was re-arrested after appearing in a video where he revealed that he was tortured and placed in solitary confinement for 252 days. In a statement released on April 24th, 2024, by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UN experts expressed alarm over Salehi’s death sentence and reported ill-treatment. They condemned the actions, which appear to target Salehi’s exercise of his right to artistic expression and creativity.
Salehi’s music has resonated widely in Iran, earning him popularity as a vocal opponent of the Islamic regime. Despite attempts by the regime to suppress dissent through threats, attacks on women, imprisonment, torture, and executions, Salehi and many like him remain steadfast in their defiance. The announcement of Salehi’s execution sentence has sparked condemnations and protests from activists and organizations within Iran and around the globe. The Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI), alongside other groups like the Global Campaign to Stop Execution in Iran, has called for a week of protest against Salehi’s sentence and executions in Iran.
