A letter by more than 700 families of political prisoners, families who are seeking Justice, political prisoners in Iran, rights activists from Iran and around the world

To:  UN Human Rights Council demanding an investigation on the crime against humanity in Iran

On 18 June, we witnessed the presidential election in Iran. It was already clear that among the filtered candidates, the government will choose its favourite and approved candidate as the president as they announced Raisi as Iran’s president. 

We the families of political prisoners and families of those who were executed; we political and civil rights activists who fight for the release of political prisoners and justice, anti-death penalty activists, women’s rights activists, student activists, workers, teachers, retirees and writers, lawyers, athletes and artists announced that: 

we do not participate in this predetermined election and in our opinion there is no different between reformist and hardliner [two section of the Islamic regime].

We said [to the regime]: You killed our children on the ground and in the air; our basic demands for bread and freedom were answered by imprisonment and bullets; you have brought down the living standard of the majority of people in Iran below the poverty line; therefore, we do not recognize this predetermined election as a legitimate one and we demand an investigation into the serious and recent crimes in relation to Mr. Raisi himself as the appointed president.  There is sufficient evidence which shows that he [Raisi] was in the ‘four members of Death Commission’ or the ‘Death Commission’ who was responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent young people in the 1980s.

Also, during his tenure as head of the judiciary system, many men and women have been arrested, tortured and executed; including the detention, torture and killing of thousands of women, children and men during the protests in November 2019, the shooting down of a Ukrainian plane and the killing of 176 innocent passengers on this flight. These are some of his crimes against humanity. 

Therefore, we, the signatories of this statement, call on the UN Human Rights Council to investigate our grievances and take effective and practical steps to establish an independent commission to gather available evidence regarding international and domestic crimes committed in Iran.
