Support for the boycott of the upcoming Presidential elections in Iran

In over four decades, the authoritarian regime of the ‘Absolute Sovereignty of the Jurist’ in Iran has drawn Iranians to sham elections, that have always involved rampant fraud, to choose the lesser evil from the regime’s selected list of candidates. In the absence of a truly republican democratic system and associated political freedoms, having no chance of nominating their own genuine candidates, and fearing the worsening of the situation, Iranians have each time participated and voted for the candidate least supported by the Supreme Leader Khamenie. In these forty some years, the different factions of the Islamic regime, from the self-proclaimed “reformers” to those who are identified as “Principlists”, have to different degrees been responsible for all the calamities befallen on Iran; from rampant corruption, to squandering national wealth in order to help obscurantist Islamist groups in the region, to pursuing a disastrous nuclear policy, suppression of all political dissent, imposition of misogynist policies, imprisonment of political and civil rights activists, humiliation and suppression of ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities, suppression of workers and students movements, destroying the environment, isolating Iran and endangering its integration, sheer incompetence in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, and….

The spontaneous mass uprisings of January 2017 and Fall 2019, both brutally suppressed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, and the protesters’ slogan of “Reformers, Principlists, this is the end” spoke to the people’s sobering realization that they no longer be deceived by the factional divisions of the regime and their opportunist supporters inside and outside Iran.

We the undersigned, Iranian academics, journalists, writers, artists, lawyers, human rights activists outside Iran, support the demands to boycott the Presidential elections. The Islamic regime has, in these long years, shown that it is incapable of reforming itself, and only the resolute will of the people will be able to replace it with a progressive, secular democratic republic.
