Campaign to release the recent arrestees in Iran

To: the Labour unions, organisations and individuals who care about freedom and human rights.

Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) has launched a campaign to pressurise the government in Iran to release the thousands of men and women who have been arrested in the recent protests in December 2017. We need your support.

The recent protests in Iran started on 28th December 2017 and were held in 92 cities and towns across the country. The scales of these demonstrations have been unprecedented in the past four decades. The people of Iran came to the streets shouting slogans demanding the overturn of the Islamic regime. Men and women from across cities chanting: ‘Down with the dictatorship’ ‘down with Rouhani’ ‘Down with Khamenei’ ‘We don’t want the Islamic Regime’ and other slogans. They were protesting against 40 years of poverty, suppression, human rights abuse, imprisonment, torture and execution imposed on them, by the Islamic regime.

According to the news received from Iran, protesters were severely attacked, more than three thousand were arrested and at least 22 people were killed by prison guards. The families of the recent arrestees gathered in front of Evin prison in Tehran to demand the release of their children. These families were threatened by the guards that they would be arrested if they continued gathering in front of the prison. Most of the families of the recent arrestees have had no news from their family member. According to the news from the families of detainees, prison authorities have subjected the recent arrestees to the most severe torture. 5 detainees have been reported dead in prison, caused by torture.

People in Iran, despite being faced with arrestment, torture and execution, have fundamentally and seriously challenged the Islamic regime’s existence. People in Iran need your solidarity and support. They are fighting against 40 years of crimes against humanity. We urge you to take action in support of the people’s fight for freedom.

CFPPI urges you to join the Campaign to release the recent arrestees in Iran and be the voice of these prisoners and their families. This is an important matter that needs your attention and action.

We urge you to take an action by sending a letter individually or on behalf of your union and organisation to the regime in Iran to demand the release of the recent arrestees. Send a letter to your government and urge them to pressurise the regime in Iran.
