Violating the Right to Life – Suspicious Deaths in Custody in the Islamic Republic of Iran

April 2025

Report Released: “Violating the Right to Life – Suspicious Deaths in Custody in the Islamic Republic of Iran” by CFPPI

This is the first comprehensive report to shed light on the alarming rise in suspicious deaths of political detainees in Iran’s prisons and detention centers, particularly since the start of the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising in 2022.

The report documents numerous cases from 2022 and 2023 in which detainees—many of them arrested during the nationwide protests—died under suspicious circumstances while in custody. The  regime in Iran has often attributed these deaths to heart attacks, suicide, or overdose, with no transparent or independent investigations conducted.

This disturbing pattern points to a deliberate strategy of silencing dissent and highlights the urgent need for international accountability and action.
